Hello Friends. We wanted to start a new series on the blog taking a look at Traveler Notebook inserts. With sellers on Etsy, online shops, Midori inserts and ways to make your own, there are so many options. We thought a series about them would be helpful.
The first insert I wanted to review was the beautiful Midori Monthly Diary 017 that I purchased on Amazon. If you are interested in purchasing the 017 click HERE.
This review will be more of a first impression. I plan on doing a second blog post after I use it for a few months.
The insert is beautiful. Lovely ivory linen cover, 48 pages with undated monthly calendars, blank pages, a world map and travel info. This insert is also stitched vs stapled.
Like most Midori inserts this measures 8.5" x 4.25".
The cover is a ivory linen and made of heavy card stock. The inside of the cover is kraft paper. If you like to paint your covers or collage you will want to make sure your mediums will adhere to the shiny linen finish. Paint will pick up on the texture. Personally I love the cover as is!
The first page has the typical Midori box and the next 2 pages are blank. The first calendar portion of the insert is this 12 month index. These pages are also not monthly dated so you can start anytime.
The insert includes 14 undated monthly spreads. Each box measures around 1" wide and 1.25" tall. Plenty of space! The monthly spread is also on 2 pages to maximize writing space.
I enjoy the undated version as you can start immediately and you can decide what day to start with. I know some prefer a Sunday start while others prefer a Monday.
After the calendar pages you have a world map and blank pages. The paper quality of this insert is excellent. I've used fountain pens and spectrum aqua markers with no problems. Depending on the ink you will see some ghosting. If you prefer 28lb paper you may not like this insert. The paper has archival qualities to it and feels thinner. I like the thinner paper but if you want fountain pen safe paper (no bleeding or ghosting) you may not want to purchase this insert. That can also depend on the ink you use. Typical of Midori inserts if you use watercolor the paper can curl.
Rounding out the pages you have a little traveler insert. While I wouldn't really use this section with my personal info it feels very traveler.
While the insert packs plenty of calendar space, blank pages and a beautiful cover it does not feel bulky in my Midori or Leather Quill. If you are looking for a regular size calendar insert I can't recommend this one enough!
I plan on doing a follow up post showing how I set this insert up in a couple of weeks.
Who makes your favorite calendar insert? I have fallen in love with the Midori insert size in my Leather Quill. I love having the extra space for my pen vs having larger inserts. I also love stuffing more inserts in my Leather Quill.
Have a insert you are looking at and would like a review on? Leave me a comment below and I will check it out.
